Middle Black Clough

Middle Black Clough is one of the Peak District’s most photogenic “hidden gems.” Tucked away in the Longdendale Valley near the Woodhead Reservoir, it offers a sense of seclusion and adventure that many more accessible waterfalls lack.
Appearance and Features
The Drop: The main waterfall features a sheer 10-metre (approx. 33-foot) drop.
The Setting: The water cascades over a dark, mossy rock face into a shallow, stony pool. The surrounding gorge is narrow and steep-sided, framed by ancient-looking woodland and gritstone boulders.
The Water: Depending on the weather, the falls can range from a delicate, lacy veil during dry spells to a powerful, peat-stained brown torrent after heavy rain.
The Walk and Difficulty
Reaching the waterfall is a short but adventurous 2-mile (3.3 km) round trip. It is generally considered challenging due to the lack of a formal, maintained path for the final section.
The Terrain: You will need to navigate through woodland, scramble over mossy boulders, and occasionally dodge fallen trees.
The River Crossing: This is the “make or break” part of the walk. To reach the falls, you must cross the stream. In dry weather, you can usually hop across stepping stones; after rain, the water can be knee-deep and fast-flowing.
Footwear: Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are a must. Many visitors prefer wellies because of the inevitable water crossings.
Parking is roadside in a layby on the A628 Woodhead Pass between Penistone and Tintwhistle.
