Nine edges walk. August 9th

The Peak District is famous for its dramatic gritstone edges, which offer some of the best walking and climbing routes in the UK. Here are nine of the most iconic edges in the National Park:

1. Stanage Edge: Perhaps the most famou r – s of all, stretching for nearly four miles. it offers stunning views over the Hope Valley and is a world-class destination for rock climbing.

2. Bamford Edge: Known for its striking overhanging rocks and its spectacular vantage point overlooking Ladybower Reservoir.

3. Curbar Edge: A popular spot for hikers that provides panoramic views of the Derwent Valley. It is often visited alongside its neighbor, Froggatt Edge.

4. Froggatt Edge: Characterized by its wooded lower slopes and open gritstone path, it offers a gentler but equally beautiful landscape.

5. Derwent Edge: Famous for its unusual wind-eroded rock formations with names like “The Salt Cellar” and “The Wheel Stones.”

6. Baslow Edge: A shorter, quieter edge known for the “Eagle Stone” and frequent sightings of Highland cattle grazing nearby.

7. Burbage Edge (North and South): Located close to Sheffield, these edges sit in a rugged valley and are popular for bouldering and easy weekend strolls.

8. Birchen Edge: Easily identified by “Nelson’s Monument” (a stone obelisk) and three large rocks named after ships from the Battle of Trafalgar.

9. Gardom’s Edge: A more secluded and atmospheric edge, featuring prehistoric cup-and-ring carvings and ancient enclosures.

This is a full day out. Over 20 miles walked and around 12 hours in duration.

You will need fitness, determination and a lot of funny anecdotes to share with your fellow walkers
